Many people choose to perform community service for different reasons. For some religious reasons compel them to serve others. For others, it is the judicial system that has compelled them to serve. While there are some who simply enjoy helping people.
No matter what your reasons for helping others are it is important to find something that suits you and keeps you motivated to go back. Your interests will generally determine which activities you fell are worthy of you sacrificing your time.
There are many worthwhile causes that are in constant need of assistance. Finding one that inspires you to take action can drive you to change the world.
Children
There are countless organizations dedicated to helping children. Abuse and neglect rates have reached epidemic levels. We rely on our educators and social workers to save our children. They are being buried under the weight of all the responsibilities we have placed on their shoulders.
Almost every county in America need more social workers and resource families. Resource families are the ones who raise the children locked in the system and provide them with the minimal amounts of support that they receive.
There are organizations that specialize in making sure no more children fall through the cracks in “the system.” Working with one of these organizations can be incredibly rewarding. It can also be a devastating experience.
You will see children at the lowest stages of their lives. You become responsible for helping them and helping their families. It can be an incredible experience to watch a child thrive in an improved home life. It can be a crushing experience to deal with parents who refuse to change or children who have been broken by years of abuse and neglect.
The Homeless
A commonly overlooked problem in many communities is the high rate of homelessness. Many smaller towns simply don’t acknowledge the silent masses of people sleeping outdoors. Larger communities tend to offer more assistance than smaller town. This is because of the higher instance of homeless people in larger cities.
No matter what size your community is there are going to be people who need assistance. Soup kitchens and homeless shelters are almost always understaffed and short on resources. Churches offer a lot of access to people in need.
The Sick
When most people think of candy-strippers they think of young girls, when in reality anyone can volunteer to help with the care of the sick. There are many different areas of attention for you to consider volunteering in.
Visiting with single people who would otherwise be alone when they are sick is one option available to volunteers. Assisting the staff at the information desk in the hospital is another way to offer your services.
Studies have shown that premature babies actually thrive when held a lot. The contact of another person helps them to develop. Since nurses are often overworked and parents have to eventually return to work, volunteers are usually asked to sit with premature babies and offer them stimulation.
Abandoned Animals
Animal shelters are often overwhelmed with dogs and cats. Volunteering your time at these facilities can be ideal for animal lovers. While not all of the work you do will be glamorous, it will allow you many opportunities to play with these animals looking for homes.
You’ll be able to get to know all of the animals in the shelter and will be able to help match them with the perfect family. In some areas, humane societies need volunteers to work as foster parents for dogs that they don’t have the facilities to handle.
Environmental Causes
Many people are passionate about the environment and the implications of industrialization. These people have formed organizations dedicated to improving our environment.
For some of these organizations the focus is educating the public. Other organizations focus on cleaning up their local community parks. Preservation societies focus on protecting the wildlife from urban sprawl.
Politics
Many people feel drawn to their local political agencies. For some this means volunteering with the local branch of a national political party. For others becoming involved in actual political process is more important and running for local office is a good decision.
There are countless other special interests that people volunteer to assist. These include historical preservation, abortion issues, and civil rights. Whatever your interests and beliefs encourage you to help, there will be many opportunities for you do so.
If there is a demand that is not being met in your community, starting your own organization is always a wonderful way to contribute. Becoming involved in the issues that surround you can open your eyes to a world you never knew existed. Finding the right issues to contribute to, can keep you involved for the rest of your life.
