How to Organize Your Home

Self-improvement :: Housing

Many people have problems with organization. Being organized can help improve your every day life. Being able to easily find things makes any project easier.

Professional organizers charge large sums of money to do things that you can easily do with a little time and a big trash bag. No matter how big or small your house, becoming better organized can help your home look nicer.

Step One= Choose a Location

Trying to organize your entire house in one day is not only overwhelming but impossible without an infinite supply of energy. It is best to start small. Choose a room or closet to begin your project.

When you begin the task of trying to organize your home, you may not be confident with your ability. Beginning with a small closet can help you get a handle on what you are doing and help you realize that organization will not be an insurmountable project.

If you are planning on having a specific theme for your room or closets, try to work on the whole area at one time. This could also include linen closets or craft rooms.

Step Two= Prepare Your Space

Once you have a place in mind, you will need to prepare your workspace. Begin by gathering materials that you will need. Having everything together before you start will save you time, helping prevent distractions while searching for the items you need.

You will need trash bags. Containers or baskets are great for closets or any place with a lot of small things. If you have a lot of open space, shelves can be remarkably helpful in making a storage space more efficient.

Having water on hand is always important when doing any kind of manual work. While organizing may not be as strenuous, it still takes energy and you don’t want to be distracted by thirst. Snacks can be helpful if you are working or a big room or one with a lot of clutter.

Music is also very nice to have while you work. Choose something with a lot of energy to help keep you energized.

Step Three= See What You Have

This is the hardest step to organizing. Pull everything out of your closet, drawers, or anywhere else you might have stashed things. Look at what you have. Now, throw away everything you don’t need.

This step is the hardest, because many people don’t need a lot of the things that they think they do. If while emptying out your closet you stumble across anything you didn’t remember having, it can go in the trash. If you remember having it but haven’t used it in more than a year, it can go in the trash.

Often people fill their homes with items of sentimental value to them. If these things are taking up most of your space, you should consider eliminating some of it. Designate a special area for your sentimental items in your house and only allow yourself enough items to fill that space. This could be a small chest or closet.

If you go through all of your things and realize that they are all important, then you will have to take another approach to trying to eliminate some the space it takes. Often minimizing the amount of space you are using is as simple as grouping things in a new way. If this is not enough to create more space, you might consider adding a shelf to a closet or a cabinet to a room.

Step Four= Put Thing Away

Organization is essentially putting things with similar items, so they take up less room and have an assigned space. After you have determined what you would like to keep, make groups of like-items. If you are organizing your craft closet, put threads in one place and cloth in another.

Find a way to bundle similar items together. If you have decorative boxes or baskets, placing your items in these can reduce clutter while maintaining an attractive appearance.

When putting things away, make sure you leave plenty of extra space for items you will undoubtedly add in the future. You don’t want to go through all of the effort to get organized, only to have you work undone with time.

Organization is a very simple task that many people avoid. Whether it is from time constraints or simply being intimidated by the size of a project, people avoid getting organized. If you start small and gradually work your way around your house, you can have a better organized home in as little as a week.
