Personal finances and credit ratings are so important to a person's stability and future, it is disturbing how many people don't hold either of these as significant priorities. It is not uncommon to hear someone admit to being ,000 in debt. Even if you stopped using your credit cards today, it could take years to pay off that kind of debt.
Since you are reading this, you are probably on the first step of your journey towards fiscal responsibility. You are showing an interest in learning how to maintain your finances and eliminate your debt.
Make a Budget
Just wanting to be debt-free will not make you debt-free. The most important thing you can ever do for yourself is to create a budget and stick to it. While this sounds very easy, it is not.
The process of making a budget is simple. Having enough restraint to stick to your budget is much harder. If restraint were easy for you, you probably wouldn't be swimming in debt. You have to be very committed to your budget, if it is going to work.
1.) Before you sit down to write your budget, gather up all your bills. This includes bank statements and receipts, as well as actual bills. If you have any automatic deductions coming out of your paycheck, make a list of them.
Begin by writing down all of your essentials. This is your housing expense, utilities, and food. These are things that you cannot live without. Make sure you can afford the basics before moving on to the next step. If you cannot afford these simple basics, consider another job or moving in with an understanding friend or family member.
2.) Next, you are going to include your basics. These are monthly bills, debt repayments, and savings. It is important that you be realistic and honest with yourself during this part.
If you have a daily habit that is extremely important to you, it should tentatively go in this category. This can include coffee, cigarettes, or anything along these lines. If you have enough money to maintain this habit you could do so. Being allowed an indulgence that is significant to you can make staying on budget easier. Think of it as a reward for doing well.
3.) Then, you are going to list all of the things you could technically survive without, but would rather not. This would be your savings, cell phone, cable and Internet. For some, this might also include a gym membership or expensive salon visits.
The last category in your budget is going to be your extras. This includes eating at restaurants, shopping, and weekend bar tabs.
Many of us spend more money than we realize on small purchases. Look through your bank statement for last month and add up all the little things. It can be very shocking to discover where you are spending so much of your money.
Once you have everything on one sheet of paper in front of you, study it. Do any areas really jump out at you? For most people, the answer is a very definitely yes. In most cases, these areas are not surprising. These are problems we are aware of but don't want to address. This brings us to the hardest part of getting our finances together, sacrifice.
Finding Ways to Cut Back
For most people, learning about how to live cheaper is considerably easier than actually managing to do so. When we are faced with giving up the things we enjoy, it becomes difficult to focus on debt repayments or future plans.
Looking for ways to avoid high-priced hobbies is a great way to save money. With a little research and comparison, you can save quite a bit of money. Initially adjusting to this new lifestyle can be difficult.
There are many less-expensive alternatives to most high-priced habits. A cable package that includes fewer channels is a good way to save money every month. Running in the park instead of on a treadmill at a trendy gym is certainly a way to cut expenses.
A common thought process that people fall into is the "I'm already in this far, what's one more thing" approach. Be aware of this and do your best to avoid falling into this trap. Just remind yourself of all progress you've made and stick to your budget.

There are many ways to receive help with budgeting, financial planning and debt repayment. Whether they are paid professionals or loving family, having someone to offer help and advice can make a considerable difference in your success.

Getting family and friends involved is another way to stay on the right path. The encouragement of loved ones can do a lot you keep you motivated. You might discover that others in your support circle are having similar problems.
Working with another person can increase your chances of success. If you and your friends usually go out every weekend, having someone to stay in and watch movies with on a Friday night can be just as fun.
Many Americans have managed to get themselves into financial trouble, incurring massive amounts of debt with very little savings. With the importance of good credit and savings increasing all the time, finding a solution to money problems has never been more significant.
If you have resolved to change your financial situation, it is possible but it will take work. Having a plan and help to achieve it, is a good start. Realizing that you are going to have to work hard is a vital step towards the conclusion of your journey.
